There are really three kinds of

July 29th, 2010

There are really three kinds of employees:

(1) Those who give us energy;

(2) Those who drain our energy; and

(3)Those who don?t affect our energy.

When you?re about to hire someone, it pays to go beyond examining their resumes, checking their credentials, and evaluating them in interviews.

After interacting with them, ask yourself: How do I feel?

Are you energized? If so, this augurs well. You may have found yourself a winner; someone who is a joy to work with, and a net plus to your organization.

If you feel no effect, the person may be acceptable, and turn out to be a consistent contributor, who neither motivates nor de-motivates you, or her colleagues.

But if you feel tired or drained of energy, watch out!

This person could be an ?energy vampire,? someone who sucks away the life force from your work group.

You won?t find this characteristic in any hiring manual or book on employee relations or the best hiring practices. But from the viewpoint of everyday atmospherics, an energy Dracula can drain your spirits and your performance faster than you can say, ?Welcome to Transylvania!?

If you get a call later on, and the candidate asks why you passed, please don?t say, ?Because I?m afraid you?ll suck my blood!?

Use a typical excuse, then thank your lucky stars, and keep wearing that protective garlic around your neck!

This may be close to impossible when you consider the popularity of coffee and soft drinks today, but caffeine is a diuretic and can exacerbate IBS symptoms that are common with Fibromyalgia. This means no caffeinated pop and also no chocolate or coffee. If you simply can?t live without these things, try to limit them the best you can or opt for caffeine-free varieties.

? Try to eliminate alcohol consumption. Not only can the combination of many common prescription medications and alcohol be very bad for you, even alcohol on its own can make symptoms worse. Alcohol can aggravate the stomach and digestive tract and cause increased bowel problems.

? Finally, try to reduce or eliminate refined white sugar from your diet.

Even when life is

July 29th, 2010

Even when life is progressing smoothly there are unpleasant tasks and choices to make. But what happens when life gets complicated and unpleasant decisions need to be made?

Like many people in the past I was often paralyzed by difficult decisions. When it seemed that there was no good choice I would often duck responsibility altogether until a decision was forced upon me. Then of course I would usually be unhappy with the results. Most people are more decisive than I was but are frustrated by their decision-making.

Some make all their decisions based on what they need or want right now. While this strategy can make life simpler, and sometimes happier, in the short term over time it often leads to problems with money, relationships, and their career.

Some make all their decisions based on their needs and wants for the coming year. While this strategy can also make life easier in the now it could still result in future problems.

Fireworks can be deadly good fun; 60 Iowans were hurt in fireworks

0 Comments | Telegraph – Herald; Dubuque, Iowa, Jul 2, 2005 | by M.D. KITTLE

Parrish Marugg and his family were just enjoying an average American Fourth of July weekend seven years ago when disaster struck.

Marugg, his wife and children were lighting fireworks at their home on Brueck Road in Dubuque. The usual backyard consumer pyrotechnics – sparklers, fountains, spinners.

Marugg closed the garage door after noticing some of the fireworks were moving a little too close for comfort. But one of the devices was apparently trapped inside.

When Marugg opened the door 15 minutes later, the garage was engulfed in flames.

“It looked small at first but then it just took off from there,” said the Dubuque businessman.

Within moments, the Marugg home was engulfed in flames. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night, but the house was a total loss.

“It was pretty dramatic to lose everything like that,” Marugg said.

But he knows things could have been much worse. Everyone was out of the house at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.

That’s not always the case. Last year, seven people were killed in fireworks-related accidents in the United States, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An estimated 9,500 injuries were reported during the Fourth of July period, defined as June 15 to July 15.

In Iowa, there were 60 reported injuries in 2004, compared to 52 injuries and one death the year before, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Dubuque area medical officials say they’ve seen their share of fireworks victims.

“After 20 years of doing this, I have seen plenty,” said Dr. Mark Singsank, an emergency medicine physician at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque. “The worst is losing a finger tip or an eye.”

Singsank said it’s rare to see a fatal incident involving fireworks, but emergency rooms across the country get their share of eye, hand and face injuries each year.

Dubuque Assistant Police Chief Terry Tobin said the reported emergency room visits might just be the tip of the iceberg.

“I think there are a lot of injuries that occur that we don’t become aware of,” he said.

The number of fireworks related injuries has declined during the years, however, although incidents have been edging up.

Jim Winner, spokesman for the National Council on Fireworks Safety, attributes the improved safety numbers to stricter federal rules and higher industry standards.

“The industry has taken an active role of self-policing,” Winner said

And if you are asking if this might also be a good place to shop around for Acura performance parts, well, maybe not. But it would be a good way to learn about vehicles and look for the kind of parts that you would like your own vehicle to bear.

It would be the Cannonball World Events who would be bringing such a grand auto activity to the continent. Cannonball World Events is a company which is based in London. It is run by Tim ?Maverick? Those are the very
basics.

We tend to forget our mental health, it is a crucial part
to being completely healthy. Every day is a new day and we
need to be willing to meet each task with a positive
attitude.

A great way to start a new day is to meditate. It does not
have to be for long, 10-15 mins. will do and will put you
in the right frame of mind to have a great day.

An other great tool for your mental health are affirmations.
Or start a journal take some time out every day and write
down what you have experienced and your feelings.

When you go for a walk, enjoy nature conciously, be
grateful for the little things in life.

Every day we can find something to be grateful for. We are
here to enjoy life and the more we do, the more it helps us
to be and stay healthy in body, mind and spirit.

Spyware Detection Alert

Every week I do a full system scan with Norton Internet Security Professional.

This version of Norton is the top of the range when it comes to detecting all manner of viruses including Trojan horses, spyware, scumware, joke programs and other programs which can cause harm or pose a security risk.

It is an excellent program and I believe my computer would be dead and buried if it was not for Norton.

My most recent scan detected a Trojan Horse called Download.Trojan. This little meanie will attempt to go to the originators site and download more Trojans, worms, viruses and execute them. Scary stuff but Norton nipped it in the bud before any problems were created.

Also, every day Norton detects threats contained within my incoming emails. It immediately removes the threats by either fixing the infected files or deleting infected emails. This can be a reason I can be accused of not answering emails. Bad luck I say to that.

Ever since I have been running Norton, I have not been scanning with Ad-Aware.

Man who had first full face transplant revealed

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 27, 2010 | by DANIEL WOOLLS

A SPANISH man who underwent the world’s first full face transplant has appeared before TV cameras for the first time since his surgery, thanking his doctors and the family of the donor.

Identified only as Oscar, the 31-year-old spoke with considerable difficulty at a news conference at Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona, where he underwent the surgery in late March.

During the 24-hour surgery, doctors lifted an entire face, including jaw, nose, cheekbones, muscles, teeth and eyelids, and placed it masklike on to the man.

Oscar has been described as a farmer who was unable to breathe or eat on his own after accidentally shooting himself in the face five years ago.

The head of the surgical team, Dr Joan Pere Barret, said the man would need between a year and 18 months of physical therapy and is expected to regain up to 90% of his facial functions.

The news conference was called because the man was being released from the hospital. He is now able to drink liquids and eat soft foods, and has been able to speak for the past two months, the hospital said in a statement.

The patient also has regained feeling in most of his face and is partly recovering movement of his muscles. One good sign was that a week after the operation, he had to be shaved because of beard growth.

However, he also suffered acute rejection twice – once four weeks after the surgery and again between the second and third months.

Both times, the new face was saved with medication.

At the news conference, Oscar seemed relaxed as he looked out at reporters with eyes he cannot yet close completely.

A younger woman, identified as his sister, said her brother was looking forward to leading a normal life.

She said he was eager to enjoy “little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him, or sitting down for a meal with his family. Doing things that all of us do on a normal day.”

A team of 14 consultants at the hospital worked on the patient three at a time in three-hour shifts from 9pm on March 20 to 9pm the following day. They were supported by 10 junior resident doctors.

When details of the face transplant emerged in April, Barret, 42, said: “Many people with facial disfigurement feel very isolated, as in this case.

“He only went out when no-one could see him, when there were not that many people around

Popularise debit cards

Popularise debit cards

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 27, 2010 | by Y.T.C.

IT is high time the government popularises the use of bank debit cards to pay for all types of utilities and goods. Debit cards should be used at post offices and retail outlets instead of credit cards.

This will be good as some people abuse credit cards.

To make it safe for consumers who use the debit card, no outlet should be allowed to introduce a surcharge on it. Currently, these outlets impose a surcharge on credit card users at their own whims and fancies.
